The One Laptop Per Child Foundation, whose mission is to distribute laptops for education into lesser-developed countries at a low cost, showed off it’s next generation laptop at a conference yesterday. The laptop, called the XO-2, can be used by two students at once and doubles as an eBook.
I hope it works as well as it looks as it really looks like a cool piece of technology. You can read more about the XO-2 here.

One of the teachers here at PRES donated one to a student in Africa last school year and received one for herself. It is indestructible and very durable. I had a hard time using it since it was so small and portable. It functions very different from what you would expect based on our experience with Mac’s. However, my very good friend was in the Peace Corps in Africa and they used them in a nearby village and she was impressed by them. I love the eBook feature. These computers run about $400 a machine for the functionality of a computer AND an eBook, while an Amazon Kindle alone runs $400. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FI73MA/ref=amb_link_6369712_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=0XCW3QZWC06BE11V7HG3&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=398464001&pf_rd_i=507846
It’s hard to think that in other countries in the world some kids that go to school like kids here in America have NEVER seen, let alone, TOUCH a computer. We should try to do a Blog/Wiki exchange with students who use these machines. Wouldn’t that be exciting?

A blog or wiki exchange with any students from a foreign county would be exciting. That’s definitely something to look at for next school year.
